We’ve been working with foundries to develop a consistent web-only font linking license. We’ve built a technology platform that lets us to host both free and commercial fonts in a way that is incredibly fast, smoothes out differences in how browsers handle type, and offers the level of protection that type designers need without resorting to annoying and ineffective DRM.
This is massive.
Not only will we finally get decent fonts on the web (and without having to have anything to do with Microsoft’s .eot—believe me this is a Good Thing™), but font foundries will get a ton of cash they’ve been too stupid to collect (music industry & iTunes, round two), AND the whole font industry will get a massive shot in the arm—heaps of new designers able to get paid to make fonts, producing heaps of new and innovative fonts.
We are witnessing the dawning of the Golden Age of web design. The next year or two are going to be amazing!
